Ripley Goes to Hogwarts

The blue flame sputtered, widened, then snapped like a rope of lightning that had found a knot. Ellen Ripley felt the world tilt, the fire licking the edge of her jacket, the smell of ozone and old stone rising in a rush. A single, blinding flash of light—blue as a glacier—blinded her, and she was slammed against cold stone that vibrated with an ancient hum.

When her vision cleared, the corridor stretched ahead in a wash of torchlight and stone arches. Rain that had seeped in through a leaky window high above left dark patches that reflected the flickering light. She could hear the distant clatter of students’ footsteps, the low murmur of voices, and a far‑off creak as a portrait shifted its painted eyes.

Ahead, a massive figure leaned against the far wall, his shoulders hunched, his bulk dwarfing the doorway. Hagrid—half‑giant, half‑myth—clutched a large, ovoid object wrapped in a faded, violet‑stained blanket. His hand trembled, the muscles in his forearm knotted like rope. The creature’s chest rose and fell with a slow, sickly pulse that sent a faint, phosphorescent glow through the folds of the fabric.
